Eat Your Way to Pearly Whites

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

While the quickest way to return your teeth to their pearly white glory is to invest in teeth whitening products, it is important to follow up those treatments with proper behavior afterwards. One of the ways to help in keeping your teeth healthy is to add more greens in your diet, as well as other vegetables and fruit.

Cutting down on staining drinks such as coffee and tea may also help in reducing the yellowing of teeth. Apples, celery and carrots act as natural stain removers, while greens such as spinach, broccoli, and lettuce create a film over the teeth that serve as a stain barrier. By increasing these veggies and fruits in your daily diet, you can prolong the effect of teeth whitening treatments.

There are a few other things you can do to help keep your teeth bright when you are eating. First, swish your mouth and sip some water after eating a couple bits of food that are known to stain teeth. Some of these include red wine, tea, blueberries, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, tomato sauce, grape juice and cranberry juice.

Second, skip bubbly beverages, even if they are diet drinks. The acid contained in these drinks can wear down tooth enamel, thus providing areas for stains to set and develop.

Finally, try to avoid sugar heavy treats, and rather go for natural sweet treats, such as dehydrated fruit, or fresh fruit.

Bubbles May Mean Bad Teeth

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Coffee and Tea may stain your teeth yellow, but they may not be the worst thing passing over your teeth. A recent study showed that other drinks are harsher on your tooth enamel, particularly bubbly soft drinks.

Yellow stains on the tooth can be overcome by proper teeth whitening treatments. Available in-home or in-office varieties. However, eroding tooth enamel is not as easily repaired.

When your tooth enamel starts to erode you can experience major tooth-related problems. Certain foods, like sweets and sodas increase the process of enamel wear. Citrus-flavored sodas hit teeth hardest, but colas cause problems as well.

Shortcomings of Laser Teeth Whitening

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

One of the most well-known dental treatments on the market today is professional laser whitening. Because of the swift and successful way of cleaning and lightening the stains on your teeth, many people choose this method of tooth whitening. However, despite the effectiveness and ease of the treatments, there are several disadvantages to this method.

The first major drawback of this procedure is the cost. A laser whitening treatment program can run as high as $1000 for dental office visits.

A second problem with laser teeth whitening is the oft experienced side-effect of tooth and gum soreness. Particularly for those who already are predisposed for sensitive teeth, this pain can affect both men and women. This is typically caused by the bleach which is used to coat the teeth during the process.

Irritation along the gum line is also a common problem for those who undergo laser teeth whitening. This irritation can be from the gel used, but is most often brought on by the laser used during the treatment.

While several of the side-effects are short term, lasting only a few days after treatment, some, like tooth pain, can be longer lasting.

Before beginning any whitening treatment, be sure to investigate all available options in order to find the one that works best for you.

Your Teeth

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

You may know that your teeth are the hardest and strongest part of the body. But did you also know that your teeth are a living part of your body?

The visible part of a tooth is called the crown, and is only a small part of the whole living system. The crown is composed of enamel, the hardest substance that can be found in the human body. This part of the tooth is enriched with calcium. This is the part of the tooth which gets stained, giving your tooth the unhealthy yellow look. Teeth whitening products can help to remove the harsh stains and brighten the look of your teeth.

Under the enamel is the dentin level. This makes up the inside of the tooth, and is a softer (yet, still hard) substance.

In the center of the tooth is the pulp. This is a small pocket in the tooth which contains blood vessels and nerve endings, providing the tooth with its blood supply. These same blood vessels and nerves run through the root of the tooth down to the jaw. Damage in these blood vessels can lead to death of the tooth if proper blood flow is disrupted.

Teeth Whitening: How to Look Five Years Younger Instantly

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

A direct correlation exists between tooth color and age. Over the years our teeth darken due to wear-and-tear and stain accumulation. Starting in our twenties our teeth begin to show a yellow cast due to the wearing down of the enamel layer which allows dentin (a tooth

Remove Day to Day Stains on Your Teeth

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Teeth color is a genetic trait, and even though teeth whitening treatments can take you back to your general base color, it is impossible to go past that.

However, how do you get to your base color? This is where a teeth whitening treatment comes into play. We expose our teeth to many things that can yellow and stain our teeth, including wine, coffee, tea and soda. Additionally, our teeth yellow as they age as the enamel of the teeth wears away exposing places for bacteria to hide and discolor our pearly whites.

Many treatment options are available on the market today for tooth whitening. When you consider the method that is best for you, it is important to look for an option that is cost-effective, as well as one that has been proven to give results.

Laser tooth whitening methods are commonly used, but the cost is relatively high for regular use. At-home treatments can be an option for maintaining a healthy smile, but some of the chemicals can be detrimental to the tooth if over-used, creating sensitivity and additional wear of the enamel.
