You may know that your teeth are the hardest and strongest part of the body. But did you also know that your teeth are a living part of your body?

The visible part of a tooth is called the crown, and is only a small part of the whole living system. The crown is composed of enamel, the hardest substance that can be found in the human body. This part of the tooth is enriched with calcium. This is the part of the tooth which gets stained, giving your tooth the unhealthy yellow look. Teeth whitening products can help to remove the harsh stains and brighten the look of your teeth.

Under the enamel is the dentin level. This makes up the inside of the tooth, and is a softer (yet, still hard) substance.

In the center of the tooth is the pulp. This is a small pocket in the tooth which contains blood vessels and nerve endings, providing the tooth with its blood supply. These same blood vessels and nerves run through the root of the tooth down to the jaw. Damage in these blood vessels can lead to death of the tooth if proper blood flow is disrupted.
